Richard started out learning Western Medicine at Otago University in Dunedin, but while studying he questioned as to why is it that there are only pharmaceuticals and surgery available for the diseases people suffer from?
Surely diet, herbs and good exercise are important in the treatment of sickness? So after leaving Uni with a BSc in Physiology and a BA in Philosophy, he began his journey as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), studying both here in New Zealand and in China. This brought him a further three degrees (DipAc -Diploma of Acupuncture, DipCherb – Diploma of Chinese Herbal Medicine, CertAdvAc (Guang Zhou)– Certificate of Advanced Acupuncture
Not only is he a highly trained and experienced acupuncturist, but he also provides herbal medicine, dietary supplements, nutritional advice and qi gong treatments.
He started his private clinic in Wellington in 2001. After building a busy inner city practice, in 2013 he felt like it was time for a new challenge. So he went to Vanuatu where he grew both as a person and as a physician, responding to both tropical and remote Third World medical challenges.
He came back to NZ in 2019, but with COVID closing borders, he has decided to make Queenstown his ‘New Vanuatu’. His father was a GP in Gore and Invercargill for many years and his mother was a midwife. He attended high school and University in Dunedin, so it is really a kind of coming home for him and we know he is looking forward to providing new health options and helping the people of the South live happy, healthy and dis-ease free lives.
He particularly thrives on difficult to treat conditions such as auto-immune diseases, gynaecological/infertility cases, cancer, skin conditions and others that do not respond well to mainstream medicine .
